Description
For sale here is an old violin, as pictured.Description: This is a full-size violin, measuring about 23 1/2" long overall, 14 3/8" body length and 8 1/8" wide at the widest point. The
top is spruce, the
back, sides and neck are flamed maple and the finger board and pegs are ebony. Inside is a typical fake label that reads "Giavoni
Paolo
Maggini, brescia 1664." The violin also has the double purfling and the extra scroll turn that are commonly seen on this type of violin. The flutes on the back of the peg box are unusual in that they have flat bottoms rather than concave-curved as are usually seen. The violin was probably made in Germany in the early 20th Century.
Condition: As found at the local flea market and as seen in the pictures.
There is a crack at the lower eye of the right F hole and another, 4 inches long, starting at the saddle. Both cracks have been repaired and they seem solid. (The saddle crack will be under the tailpiece when the violin is set up.) Otherwise, I see no cracks, repairs or open seams. The varnish has some wear
at the chin rest, but otherwise it is
completely intact with almost no wear or scratching. The top edges have very little wear. The pegs fit well, but they probably could use some lubrication. The sound post is loose inside.
The condition of the violin can best be assessed by looking at the pictures. Look at them; they are part of the description.
To be made playable, this violin needs the F hole crack glued plus the usual maintenance procedures: sound post set up, bridge, tail piece, end pin, strings, chinrest, etc. Please contact me if you have any questions or if you want more pictures.
There is no case or bow included.
This
is being sold as is, for a set up/repair project, with no return option. Please bid accordingly.
