Vintage Letter Opener & Postage Scale & Ruler
1950’s
Here on offer is an unusual Vintage Linex celluloid/lucite letter opener, ruler & letter scale, made in 1952. Its elegant design and low production cost meant it quickly became a popular commercial give-away carrying brands such as CCW.
It has the maker marks ''LINEX Made in Denmark U.S. Pat No 2.612.365'' on the reverse by the red pivot buttons.
The American patent, with number 2,612,365 was granted to this design on September 30, 1952. The patent is granted to Frede Duelund Nielsen from Rödovre, Vanlöse, Denmark. The first application already was made January 30, 1950, in Denmark. This good-looking Linex product is a letter scale, a letter opener and a ruler is limited in its usefulness as a scale.
The possibilities to clamp a large range of thicknesses are too restricted. This is a scale with unequal arms and it has five possible pivot-positions, the red knobs serve as a center of rotation. Successively the letter is lighter or heavier than ¼, ½, 1, 1½, of 2 oz.
This type of scale is also called Bismar. Positions of load (letter) and weight are fixed. The position of the pivot, or of the swivelling point, is to be chosen, by which pair of red beads are to be grasped.
This really is a fascinating bygone and will make a wonderful addition to a collector.
The opener measures 22cm long, 3.2cm wide and weighs 15g
